The Folkloric Descent of the Nalón is a fun and festive sailing event that takes place along the Nalón river in the county of Laviana, in the region of Asturias. Original boats are built by the participants, who have to sail the boat along a river which has very little flow.

At last a maritime procession! The 15th August is the date on which many festivals are held in Spain, so that it is difficult to choose one from all of them. It is the setting of a beautiful fishing village and the Cantabrian Coast, together with this kind of procession, that has made me choose this one.

The Descent of the Sella is is the most international event which has taken place in Asturias.
Since 1930, when Dionisio De la Huerta joined some friends to make the trip down the river, a canoeing celebration has been held every year. But it was not until 1936, when this recreational trip became a competition, although a lot of participants join in just looking for fun and not for any prize.
