JARRAMPLAS -EL PIORNAL-
Saint Sebastian Day was approaching and I did not have enough time to drive up to the city of San Sebastián -The Basque Country-. So, this year, instead of enjoying my beloved ‘Tamborrada‘, I decided to travel closer, to Piornal, in the Valle del Jerte (Extremadura), where the ‘JARRAMPLAS’ festival is celebrated on the same dates. The ‘Tamborrada’ of San Sebastian is a festival held every year on January 20th, the St. Sebastian´s Patron Saint´s Day. During the 24 hours the festival lasts, participants dressed as either cooks or military drummers from the Napoleonic period, march as ‘tamborradas’ playing drums and barrels throughout the streets of the city.
The Day of the Geese is normally held on September 5th, as a part of the Patronal Festival of Lekeitio, San Antolines. It is a competitive festival with a long tradition.
The port of Lekeitio is full of ‘chalupas‘ (small boats), which are awaiting their turn to sail under the goose (a random lottery, that determines the order in which the ‘chalupas’ sail, is held on the morning). The ‘Cipotegato’ is the popular name of the main character of the Tarazona Festivities celebrated in honour of its patron Saint Atilano, who, dressed in a harlequin´s disguise, faces an excited multitude, who cheer him and throw tomatoes at him.
